Getting the Money Out of Frisco Politics: It’s Time

Frequently I get asked “What would I change as Mayor?” -or- “Frisco is so successful, why do we need change?”

As I reflect on these questions, one of the things I would like to discuss is how to ensure Frisco continues to be focused on its residents.

I would be your Mayor, not just the Mayor of people who do business in Frisco.

In Frisco local elections today, there is a perception of oversized influence of those who contribute large amounts to campaigns. These individuals can contribute tens of thousands of dollars to the Mayor and council members. As a result, there doesn’t appear to be a perception of impartiality.

Good government is responsible for understanding how certain situations create perceptions that the playing field is not level. As your Mayor, I would work to change that.

I would work to limit individual donations to no more than $1,000 per candidate, per year. An elected official can continue to receive more than $1,000 from individual donors; however, they then must recuse themselves from any and all discussions related to projects or votes on projects that the donor may have before the city.

This is just the right thing to do. Can you imagine the transparency that would create?

The City of Plano has already enacted a similar measure. Frisco residents deserve a level playing field when it comes to making decisions that impact their community.
